Abstract: Taking the renovation and transformation project within the historical and cultural conservation area of the Bund in Shanghai as an example, this paper conducts a comparative analysis of the implementation strategies and specific plans for the development of three-story underground space beneath century-old buildings in a three-sided enclosed site. Two underground space development models, namely in-situ replacement and reciprocating displacement of buildings, are proposed. Combined with the top-down and bottom-up methods of foundation pit construction, four specific implementation plans are classified into two categories. Based on the process sequence of each implementation plan, an analysis is conducted from the perspectives of construction period and cost to select the underground space development plan that is suitable for the specific conditions of this project.
