Impact of Continuous Nursing on Self-Management Ability and Rehabilitation Outcomes of Discharged Patients in Gastrointestinal Surgery

Abstract: To explore the effect of continuous nursing on post-discharge self-management ability and rehabilitation outcomes of gastrointestinal surgery patients, offering a reference for optimizing clinical post-discharge nursing. A total of 102 patients discharged from our hospital’s gastrointestinal surgery department (May 2024–May 2025) were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group (51 each) via random number table. The control group received routine discharge nursing, while the observation group additionally received 8-week continuous nursing. Self-management ability, rehabilitation outcomes, quality of life (QoL), and nursing satisfaction were compared to pre- and post-intervention. Post-intervention, the observation group had significantly higher total and subscale (dietary/medication management, symptom monitoring, rehabilitation exercise) self-management scores, lower complication rate (3.92% vs 17.65%) and readmission rate (1.96% vs 13.73%), higher overall QoL scores, and higher nursing satisfaction (96.08% vs 82.35%) than the control group (all P < 0.05). Continuous nursing significantly improves post-discharge self-management ability, reduces adverse outcomes, enhances QoL, and increases nursing satisfaction in gastrointestinal surgery patients, worthy of clinical promotion.
