Abstract: As the core of Maslow's humanistic psychology, the theory of Hierarchy of Needs has a great influence on various fields of social sciences, but its dogmatic features limit its analysis on human behaviors. It is pointed out in this paper that the Self-Assertiveness Demands are the determinant needs of personal development and the essence of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. The Self-Assertiveness Demands theory avoids defects of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs theory.
