Preparation of magnetic sorbent for oil separation by coal-derived diatomite

Abstract: In order to realize high efficiency utilization of coal-derived diatomite as solid waste resources, the presented study using coal-derived diatomite of Yunnan Xianfeng as carrier for preparing magnetic sorbents to clean and treat crude oil from the polluted marine environments. The Co nanoparticles were prepared by chemical co-precipitation method. The magnetic sorbent was further prepared by mixing different ratios of Co nanoparticles and diatomite depending on application environment under magnetic stirring. Characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and X - ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) and simultaneous thermal analysis (TG/DSC), the experimental results showed that the magnetic diatomite is an ideal material for crude oil cleaning. The optimized ratio of magnetic nanoparticles: diatomite to clean up oil pollution is 1:5 with removal efficiency of 91.6%. In this paper, the experimental study showed that a potential comprehensive utilization way of non-metallic mineral resources for preparing magnetic sorbent for reducing the influence of crude oil pollution to the environment.
