Are Women Wearing Eyeglasses More Likely to Comply with a Request from a Man Wearing Eyeglasses?

Full Text(PDF, 56KB)

Author: Yasuto Okamura

Abstract: Perceiving similarity with others could increase positive attitudes and behaviors towards the similar others. The present study investigated whether eyeglasses wearers positively react to a helping request by another eyeglasses wearer. Participants were asked whether they would respond to a questionnaire and motivation for participation in a fictitious experiment by a confederate wearing eyeglasses. Results showed that eyeglasses wearers are more likely to comply with the request from the confederate and are more willing to help the confederate. These results confirmed that a subtle cue of facial appearance is sufficient to activate similarity perception. Theoretical and practical interests are discussed.
