Selection of Phytoremediation Species for Chromium Contaminated Soil

Abstract: At present, the chromium pollution in soils has become an urgent environmental problem, and phytoremediation has been proved to be a very promising method to deal with this problem. In order to achieve good results, we have to select the plants with high tolerance and high concentration of chromium. Nowadays, the methods used to select phytoremediation species are selecting dominant plants in survey area, investigation in wild area, planting plants with different concentration gradients of heavy metals, and planting the seeds collected from the polluted soil. This experiment aims at the selection of phytoremediation species in Bahia grass and Bermuda grass by planting them in flowerpot. The results show that: while concentrations of chromium is equal to the national secondary standard in the soil, both Bahia grass and Bermuda grass have a good capacity of absorbing in heavy metal chromium, and Bahia grass has better absorption capacity than Bermuda grass, which indicates that Bahia grass can be used as a potential chromium pollution phytoremediation, pending future of the further study, to determine whether it can be used in the remediation of chromium contaminated soil.
