Uncertainty Assessment of Migratable Heavy Metals in Toy Materials According to International Standard 8124-3

Abstract: With the rise of the popular toy "Slime" crystal mud in the market, concerns about its safety have frequently emerged. CCTV has exposed that "Slime" crystal mud contains borax, a component harmful to human health. Reports indicate that almost all "Slime" crystal mud products available on the market contain borax, which easily adheres to the skin and poses a threat to children's health. As related incidents occur frequently, consumer awareness of harmful substances in toys has increased, especially concerning migratable heavy metals that are easily ingested. Currently, there is no specific domestic regulation for toys containing boron elements, whereas international standard 8124-3 has been introduced regulatory requirements for boron. To ensure the accuracy of measurement results, we have developed a method using ICP-OES technology to detect the uncertainty of migratable heavy metals in toy materials. By analyzing the detection process of migratable heavy metals in materials using ICP-OES, including aspects such as experimental reagents, utensils, reference materials, and operators, we identified the sources of uncertainty and calculated the uncertainty of each variable, ultimately deriving the combined and expanded uncertainty of the detection results. The establishment of this method provides an important reference for ensuring toy safety and helps consumers make safer toy choices, ensuring the healthy growth of children. When purchasing toys, consumers should pay attention to the product's ingredients and quality, selecting those that have passed rigorous testing to ensure the safety and health of their children.
