Study on J-C Translation of Learning Economics through Japanese History Based on Functionalist Translation Theory

Abstract: The translation material in this paper is from Learning Economics through Japanese History written by Kazuhide Yokoyama. In view of its ample historical materials and plain explanation of economic principles, it truly has high application value. The translation practice was guided by the functionalist translation theory, and we mainly use the core principle Skopos theory and its three rules: purpose rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule in the process of translation. The translation of loanwords and technical terms in the lexical dimension and the translation of logical nested sentences in the sentence dimension are the two main challenges. Skopos Theory emphasizes that translation methods and strategies must be determined by the intended purpose or function of the target text. Therefore, according to different contexts, this study flexibly applies translation methods such as literal translation, free translation, additional translation, co-translation and other translation techniques. This translation practice verifies the feasibility of Skopos theory in guiding the translation of information texts.
