A Case Study of the Direct Method in Teaching Chinese Vocabulary in Thailand

Abstract: This thesis is based on the author's ten-month Chinese language teaching in Aksorn suksa school in Thailand as practice-based research. It analyses the author's use of the direct method in vocabulary teaching from five aspects: vocabulary introduction, vocabulary demonstration and explanation, vocabulary practice, vocabulary review, and classroom assessment, and demonstrates the feasibility of the direct method in vocabulary teaching. The problems of applying the direct method to vocabulary teaching are also discussed i.e. the direct method has limitations in the scope of vocabulary teaching, language barriers, greater need for resources, increased students’ vocabulary memorization burden, increased students’ grammatical comprehension difficulty, confusing classroom records, and cultural and cognitive differences difficulty. In response to these problems, this study makes relevant pedagogical recommendations.
