The Relationship between Procrastination, Online Hoarding, and Online Self-expansion and Psychological Distress

Abstract: This study explores the relationship between general procrastination and psychological distress such as depression, anxiety and stress, and examines the mediating role of online hoarding behavior and the moderating role of online self-expansion. 789 college students were recruited in the study to complete the questionnaires about general procrastination, online hoarding behavior, online self-expansion and psychological distress. Results showed that general procrastination was positively correlated with online hoarding behavior and psychological distress, and negatively correlated with online self-expansion. Online hoarding behavior was positively correlated with online self-expansion and psychological distress. General procrastination not only had a direct effect on psychological distress, but also could affect psychological distress through the mediating role of online hoarding behavior. The link between general procrastination, online hoarding behavior and psychological distress was moderated by online self-expansion. Individuals with low-level online self-expansion were more likely to have psychological distress due to procrastination, and the mediating effect of online hoarding behavior was more significant in individuals with low-level online self-expansion. Conclusively, online hoarding behavior acts as a bridge between general procrastination and psychological distress, while as online self-expansion plays a moderating role in the mechanism of general procrastination or online hoarding behavior leading to psychological distress.
