Study on Japanese-Chinese Translation based on Functionalist Translation Theory — Taking “Introduction to Anthroposociology” As the Translation Material

Full Text(PDF, 68KB)

Author: Huan Yu, Liying Mi

Abstract: This study selects the book "Introduction to Anthroposociology," co-authored by several faculty members from the College of Human and Social Sciences at Chiba University of Commerce in Japan, as the translation material. Guided by functionalist translation theory, the research focuses on applying Skopos theory and its three main principles, i.e., purpose, coherence, and fidelity, in the translation practice. This translation practice research has two major challenges: the translation of professional vocabulary in the lexical dimension and cultural vocabulary, as well as the translation of "interlocking" long sentences and "box-in-box" long sentences in the sentence dimension. Functionalist translation theory emphasizes that the purpose of translation determines the translation strategy, the final form of the target text, and the degree of association between the source and target texts. Therefore, this study flexibly applies translation methods such as literal translation and free translation, as well as translation techniques such as addition, inversion, and split translation, based on different contexts. The results of the translation practice validate the feasibility of using functionalist translation theory to guide the translation of anthroposociology texts.
